Estradiol
About Estradiol
The primary female estrogen hormone. Estradiol treats menopausal symptoms including hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness. It is available as oral tablets, transdermal patches, gels, and vaginal preparations. The Womens Health Initiative study in 2002 found increased risks of breast cancer and cardiovascular events with oral hormone therapy, dramatically reducing its use. Transdermal estradiol may have lower risks. Estradiol is also used in gender affirming hormone therapy for transgender women.
