Everolimus
About Everolimus
An mTOR inhibitor derived from a bacterium found on Easter Island. Everolimus or Afinitor treats kidney cancer, breast cancer, and neuroendocrine tumors. It works by inhibiting mTOR, a protein that regulates cell growth and division. Everolimus is also used as an immunosuppressant in organ transplant patients. The related drug rapamycin or sirolimus was originally discovered in soil from Easter Island in 1972. Everolimus represents how natural compounds from remote locations can lead to important cancer treatments.
