Ezetimibe
About Ezetimibe
A medication that lowers cholesterol by blocking absorption in the intestine. Ezetimibe or Zetia treats high cholesterol by inhibiting Niemann-Pick C1-Like 1 protein, which transports cholesterol across the intestinal wall. It is often combined with statins for additive LDL reduction. The IMPROVE-IT trial showed that adding ezetimibe to statins reduced cardiovascular events. Ezetimibe is valuable for patients who cannot achieve cholesterol targets on statins alone. The drug is generally well tolerated with minimal side effects. It is now available as a generic, reducing cost.
