About Fenofibrate

A fibrate medication that lowers triglycerides and raises HDL cholesterol. Fenofibrate or Tricor treats hypertriglyceridemia, a condition that increases pancreatitis risk when triglycerides are very high. It works by activating PPAR alpha receptors. The ACCORD trial showed that adding fenofibrate to statins did not reduce cardiovascular events overall, though a subgroup with high triglycerides and low HDL may benefit. Fenofibrate is generally well tolerated. It can interact with statins to increase muscle toxicity risk.
