Fluorouracil
About Fluorouracil
A chemotherapy drug that inhibits DNA synthesis. Fluorouracil or 5 FU treats colon cancer, breast cancer, and skin cancers. It is an antimetabolite that mimics uracil, incorporating into DNA and RNA and disrupting function. Fluorouracil is a key component of colon cancer chemotherapy regimens. Topical fluorouracil or Efudex treats precancerous skin lesions. The drug can cause significant bone marrow suppression and gastrointestinal toxicity. Dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase deficiency increases toxicity risk.
