Fosfomycin
About Fosfomycin
A unique antibiotic notable for very short treatment regimens for uncomplicated bladder infections. Fosfomycin or Monurol works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through a different mechanism than penicillins. This convenience makes it well suited to uncomplicated UTIs. Fosfomycin has minimal resistance and causes less disruption of gut flora than many other antibiotics. It is also available intravenously for serious infections in some countries. The drug is increasingly important as resistance to standard UTI antibiotics grows.
