About Lamotrigine

An antiseizure medication also approved for bipolar disorder. Lamotrigine or Lamictal treats partial and generalized seizures and bipolar depression. It is one of the few medications effective for bipolar depression without causing mania. Lamotrigine works by inhibiting voltage sensitive sodium channels. Slow dose escalation at the start of treatment is used to reduce the risk of Stevens Johnson syndrome, a serious skin reaction. Once tolerated, lamotrigine is generally well tolerated with minimal cognitive side effects.
