Gentamicin
About Gentamicin
An aminoglycoside antibiotic used for serious gram negative infections and sepsis. Gentamicin is derived from Micromonospora bacteria. It works by causing bacterial ribosomes to misread mRNA. Gentamicin requires monitoring because it can cause kidney damage and hearing loss. Despite toxicity, it remains important for severe infections including endocarditis and sepsis in combination with other antibiotics.
