About Glipizide

A sulfonylurea that stimulates the pancreas to produce more insulin. Glipizide treats type 2 diabetes by closing potassium channels in pancreatic beta cells, triggering insulin release. It is inexpensive and effective but can cause hypoglycemia and weight gain. Sulfonylureas were among the first oral diabetes medications, introduced in the 1950s after researchers in the 1940s noticed that some sulfonamide antibiotics lowered blood sugar. They remain widely used for type 2 diabetes.
