About Hydroxychloroquine

A medication originally developed for malaria that is now mainly used for autoimmune diseases. Hydroxychloroquine or Plaquenil treats systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. It modifies immune function through mechanisms that are still not fully understood. The drug gained enormous attention during the COVID 19 pandemic when it was promoted as a potential treatment, despite lack of evidence. Clinical trials showed it was ineffective for COVID. Regular eye examinations are part of long term monitoring because it can cause retinal damage.
