Insulin
About Insulin
The discovery of insulin by Banting and Best in 1921 transformed diabetes from a death sentence into a manageable condition. Before insulin, type 1 diabetes patients survived only months. Insulin allows glucose to enter cells, lowering blood sugar. Frederick Banting and John Macleod received the Nobel Prize in 1923. Insulin cannot be taken orally because it is digested. Modern insulin includes rapid acting, long acting, and premixed formulations. The high cost of insulin in the US has sparked intense political controversy.
