Levothyroxine
About Levothyroxine
A synthetic thyroid hormone that replaces the natural hormone T4. Levothyroxine or Synthroid treats hypothyroidism, one of the most common chronic conditions. It is one of the most prescribed medications in the US. Levothyroxine restores normal metabolism, energy, and body functions in patients with underactive thyroids. Dosing is individualised by a prescriber using TSH blood tests. Food and some supplements can reduce its absorption. Switching between brand and generic products has been debated because of its narrow therapeutic range.
