Linezolid
About Linezolid
The first oxazolidinone antibiotic, active against resistant gram positive bacteria including MRSA and vancomycin resistant enterococci. Linezolid or Zyvox treats skin infections, pneumonia, and other serious infections caused by resistant bacteria. It works by inhibiting protein synthesis at the 50S ribosomal subunit. Linezolid was expensive while under patent. Long term use causes bone marrow suppression and neuropathy. The drug is also a weak MAO inhibitor, so interactions with serotonergic drugs and high tyramine foods are a recognised concern. Linezolid is reserved for resistant infections when other options fail.
