Loperamide
About Loperamide
An opioid receptor agonist that does not cross the blood brain barrier. Loperamide or Imodium treats diarrhea by slowing intestinal motility. It is available over the counter and is one of the most used antidiarrheal medications. At normal doses, loperamide has no central opioid effects. At massive doses, it can cross the blood brain barrier and has been abused as an opioid substitute, leading to cardiac arrhythmia warnings on the label. At standard doses, it is considered safe and effective.
