An anti inflammatory medication for inflammatory bowel disease. Mesalamine or Asacol treats ulcerative colitis and Crohns disease by delivering 5 aminosalicylic acid directly to the intestine. It reduces inflammation in the bowel lining. Mesalamine is first line therapy for mild to moderate ulcerative colitis. It is available in oral and rectal formulations. The drug is generally well tolerated with minimal side effects. Mesalamine maintenance therapy helps prevent ulcerative colitis flare ups.
