Metformin
About Metformin
The first line oral medication for type 2 diabetes. Metformin reduces glucose production in the liver and improves insulin sensitivity. Metformin derives from compounds in French lilac or Galega officinalis, a plant used in folk medicine since medieval times. It is inexpensive, effective, and is being studied for possible anti aging effects. Metformin does not cause weight gain or hypoglycemia. Rarely it causes lactic acidosis. The drug is on the WHO essential medicines list and is one of the most widely used medications in the world.
