About Montelukast

A leukotriene receptor antagonist taken as a tablet. Montelukast or Singulair treats asthma and allergic rhinitis. It blocks leukotrienes, inflammatory molecules involved in asthma. The convenience of a pill made montelukast popular, especially for children. In 2020, the FDA added a black box warning for neuropsychiatric side effects including depression, agitation, and suicidal thoughts. Despite warnings, montelukast remains useful for patients who cannot use inhaled corticosteroids.
