Neomycin
About Neomycin
An aminoglycoside antibiotic used topically for skin infections and orally for bowel preparation before surgery. Neomycin was discovered by Selman Waksman, who also discovered streptomycin. It is too toxic for systemic use. Neomycin is commonly found in over the counter antibiotic ointments. Oral neomycin suppresses gut bacteria before intestinal surgery. Allergic contact dermatitis from neomycin is relatively common.
