Niacin
About Niacin
A B vitamin that at pharmacological doses lowers cholesterol. Niacin or nicotinic acid lowers LDL cholesterol and triglycerides while raising HDL cholesterol. It was one of the first cholesterol treatments. The AIM HIGH and HPS2 THRIVE trials showed no additional benefit of niacin over statins, reducing its use. Niacin causes flushing, a warm red uncomfortable sensation, which limits adherence. Extended release formulations reduce flushing. Despite reduced use, niacin remains an option for patients who cannot tolerate statins.
