A broad spectrum antiparasitic and antiviral medication. Nitazoxanide or Alinia treats giardiasis, cryptosporidiosis, and other parasitic diarrheal infections. It is the only FDA approved treatment for cryptosporidiosis, which can be life threatening in immunocompromised patients. Nitazoxanide has also shown activity against influenza, hepatitis C, and COVID 19 in laboratory studies. The drug is generally well tolerated. It is particularly valuable in developing countries where parasitic infections are common.
