A multi target antifolate chemotherapy drug. Pemetrexed or Alimta treats non small cell lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, the cancer caused by asbestos exposure. It works by inhibiting multiple enzymes involved in DNA synthesis. Folic acid and vitamin B12 supplementation is used alongside it to reduce toxicity. Pemetrexed is given intravenously. The drug was the first approved treatment specifically for mesothelioma, providing hope for patients with this devastating asbestos related cancer.
