Pioglitazone
About Pioglitazone
An insulin sensitizer that activates PPAR gamma receptors. Pioglitazone or Actos treats type 2 diabetes by improving how muscle and fat respond to insulin. It can cause fluid retention, weight gain, and may increase bladder cancer risk with long term use. Pioglitazone has cardiovascular benefits including reducing stroke risk in insulin resistant patients. The related drug rosiglitazone or Avandia was heavily restricted after cardiovascular safety concerns. Pioglitazone remains available and useful.
