About Polyethylene Glycol

An osmotic laxative marketed as MiraLAX. Polyethylene glycol treats constipation by drawing water into the intestine. It is available over the counter and is one of the most recommended laxatives. Unlike stimulant laxatives, PEG can be used long term without dependence. It is tasteless and dissolves in any liquid. PEG is also used for bowel preparation before colonoscopy at higher doses. The medication is widely used in both children and adults and has largely displaced older laxative formulations.
