About Polymyxin B

A last resort antibiotic for multidrug resistant gram negative infections. Polymyxin B belongs to an old class of antibiotics. It treats infections caused by carbapenem resistant bacteria when no other options exist. Polymyxin B works by disrupting bacterial cell membranes. The drug is nephrotoxic and neurotoxic, requiring careful dosing and monitoring. Despite being discovered in the 1940s, polymyxins have been resurrected because of the desperate need for antibiotics active against superbugs.
