Streptomycin
About Streptomycin
The first effective treatment for tuberculosis, discovered by Albert Schatz and Selman Waksman. Streptomycin is an aminoglycoside derived from Streptomyces griseus. It revolutionized TB treatment, turning a near certain death sentence into a curable disease. Waksman received the Nobel Prize in 1952. Streptomycin is still used for drug resistant TB. It can cause hearing loss and kidney damage, requiring careful monitoring.
