About Sulfamethoxazole-Trimethoprim

A combination antibiotic also known as Bactrim or Septra. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim work synergistically to block bacterial folate synthesis in two steps. The combination treats UTIs, MRSA skin infections, and Pneumocystis pneumonia in HIV patients. It is inexpensive and widely available. Common side effects include rash and nausea. The combination is on the WHO essential medicines list as a critical antibiotic.
