Sumatriptan or Imitrex treats migraine headaches by stimulating serotonin 5 HT1B and 5 HT1D receptors, constricting blood vessels and reducing inflammation. It revolutionized migraine treatment, providing relief for millions of sufferers. Sumatriptan is available as tablets, nasal spray, and injection. It can cause chest tightness and is contraindicated in patients with heart disease. Multiple triptan derivatives have since been developed. Sumatriptan remains one of the most widely used migraine medications.
