About Tenofovir
A nucleotide analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor used for HIV and hepatitis B. Tenofovir is a component of Truvada, the medication used for HIV PrEP or pre exposure prophylaxis. PrEP is highly effective at preventing HIV acquisition when used consistently. Tenofovir is also effective against hepatitis B. It is generally well tolerated but can cause kidney and bone problems with long term use. Tenofovir is on the WHO essential medicines list and is taken by millions worldwide.
