About Valacyclovir
A prodrug of acyclovir with much better oral absorption. Valacyclovir or Valtrex converts to acyclovir in the body. It treats genital herpes, cold sores, and shingles. Better absorption permits less frequent dosing than acyclovir. Valacyclovir is also used for suppressive therapy to reduce herpes transmission. The drug is generally well tolerated. In a major trial, suppressive therapy reduced herpes transmission by about half. Valacyclovir is one of the most prescribed antiviral medications.
