Tigecycline
About Tigecycline
A glycylcycline antibiotic derived from tetracycline. Tigecycline or Tygacil treats complicated skin infections and intra abdominal infections caused by resistant bacteria. It has broad spectrum activity including against MRSA and resistant gram negative organisms. An FDA warning noted increased mortality compared to other antibiotics, limiting its use. Tigecycline is reserved for infections where alternatives are not available. The drug is given intravenously. It demonstrates how broad spectrum antibiotics carry tradeoffs between coverage and safety.
