Tiotropium
About Tiotropium
A long acting anticholinergic bronchodilator marketed as Spiriva. Tiotropium treats COPD by blocking muscarinic receptors in airway smooth muscle, causing 24 hour bronchodilation. It is delivered by inhaler, including dry powder devices. Tiotropium was the first long acting anticholinergic for COPD. It reduces COPD exacerbations and improves quality of life. The drug is also used as add on therapy in severe asthma. It has become a cornerstone of COPD management worldwide.
