It works through multiple mechanisms including sodium channel blockade and GABA enhancement. Topiramate can cause weight loss, making it attractive for some patients. Cognitive side effects including word finding difficulty and memory problems are common. The drug is also approved for weight loss in combination with phentermine as Qsymia.
