Venlafaxine
About Venlafaxine
A serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor or SNRI. Venlafaxine or Effexor treats depression and anxiety disorders. At low doses it acts like an SSRI, but at higher doses it also affects norepinephrine. Venlafaxine can raise blood pressure. Missed doses or abrupt discontinuation can cause unpleasant withdrawal symptoms including brain zaps, electric shock sensations. The drug is effective for patients who do not respond to SSRIs. Venlafaxine is also used for nerve pain and hot flashes.
